Best and Worst Charanams

We have great songs that start off with amazing preludes and pallavis and also great interludes. However, there are some songs that have lost their impact because of long winding charanams. My favorite all time greatest charanam is for the song "Vaasamilla Malaridhu, Vasanthathey Theyduthu" by the inimitable T Rajender/SPB in Oru Thalai Raagam. Then comes the charanam for the song "Kanni Raasi Un Raasi" by KJY/G Devarajan. One of the best songs of IR himself as he has claimed lost its impact on me because of the long and lost charanam. The song was, Idhayam Oru Koil from Idaya Koil. Nanbargale, please list out your best and worst charanams after looking at the previous posting as if you agree or disagree and add your input. Like are there some innovative charanams like for the song "Lucky, Lucky" of ARR. You know, Charanam is a concept only unique to Indian music. A beautiful, short and sweet charanam goes a long way in making a fantastic song.

  I agree the charanam in Idhayam oru Koil was a bit long, but IMO it can't be remotely even called a bad one. I can't understand why a charanam needs to be short to be good. My fav. charanams

  Udhaya observations are great. I must say there was a point in time when IR's pallavi' irritated me when he used the algorithmic briding of the starting of the pallavi and anu pallavi. Only very few charanams were long-winded and pointless. However, ARR has more charanams that are irritating, but the innovative charanams are definitely just amazing ones than his pallavis.
  
  Hats of to both of them. Other music directors have also come up with unusual and exciting charanams, that include V Kumar, Rajen Nagendra and Vijay Bhaskar. MSV charanam's are more like continuations of his pallavi's which is the best thing I like about his songs. I think that is the difficulty of creating MSV type songs. Strong and flowing pallavi' with well connected charanam's.

  what do u guys mean by worst charanams? is it only the length that decides whether a charanam is good or bad? in that case how is the charanam of idhayam oru kovil or nilavu thoongum neram longer than the pallavi?

  vijay,
  I may not be technically accurate in drawing the line where pallavi ends and where charanam begins for these songs, I just wrote down my nominees for ones that sound good to me and ones that leave me desiring more. Length of the pallavi wasn't the only measure for me. The songs that I didn't care for had meandering charanams that ran out of steam. Of course, I'm always the heretic, these are strictly IMO as usual.
