Alai Payuthey is being remade in Hindi as 'Saathiya'. It is directed by Shaad Ali who was Mani Ratnam's assistant. Shaad Ali is the son of veteran filmmaker Muzaffar Ali(who directed Umrao Jaan) and his ex-wife Subhashini Ali(she is the daughter of Captain Laxmi Sehgal, freedom fighter who headed the women's battalion-Rani Laxmibai battalion-in Subhash Chandra Bose's Indian National Army. She recently debuted as an actress in the role of Shahrukh's mother in Asoka. She is also a reknowned women's rights activist and ex-MP). 'Saathiya' will star Vivek Oberoi, son of Suresh Oberoi and Rani Mukherjee. It will be jointly produced by Mani Ratnam and Yash Chopra. The music will be by A.R.Rahman. It is not clear if it will contain the songs from Alai Payuthey or have new songs or be a combination of both. Gulzar has been signed to write the lyrics. HMV-Saregama has just acquired the music rights for a fabulous sum and will be releasing the music in end-February. The film is expected to release in Mid-July.

Saregama India is all set to acquire the music rights of five films to be made by ace film-maker Yash Chopra. According to sources, the company has picked up the music rights for three of these films for a total cost of about Rs. 15 crore. We have already acquired the music rights for three films, said Saregama India executive director Harish Dayani. Dayani was however, unwilling to divulge the acquisition costs.

The music for the first of these films will be released in mid this year. The movie, which is tentatively titled Saathiya, will be produced by Mani Ratnam, and the world rights will be held by Yash Chopra. The world rights generally comprise the rights for distribution, music and satellite television. The music for the other two films will be released later next year, said Dayani.
