Everyone knows how bad this guy's music is & how rotten his musical ethics(that is if he has one!) are. When I saw the making of Citizen on SUN TV, there was an interview with him, the producer & the director.
Deva looked so washed up & was trying to tell us(all generic stuff) what he is trying to do for this movie & the singers that he shamelessly brought in. This thick-skinned guy jumped on to Vasundra Das' bandwagon as she's the latest hype. It isn't surprising that whatever is popular now, he'll just rip it off without guilt and blatantly.
Even the producers were telling us abt the extra effort & time he has taken to do the re-recording. NOTE: It is such a BIG deal & BIG news for this guy to spend time to do bgm.
On the whole, I really find it pathetic for any film makers to go to Deva. I mean, we all know how 'original' he is. But for producers/directors to go to him is so pathetic. It just shows they don't realize the importance of film music and you wonder how they became film makers.
Deva composes tunes like how we laymen would compose. I mean if someone asks us to compose a short music, we would come out like what this guy does...really. All the choom choom choom & tum tum tum....it is so amatuerish. And it doesn't stop there. He just goes on & on in so many films. In the big-touted Citizen's music he tried to sound like ARR's music quality. Wow, such unrelentless effort by a genius!
Right now, I am trying to get in touch with the Los Angeles Film Music Union and the movie companies. Am going to inform them abt how this guy has utilised Jerry Goldsmith's Congo & First Knight & John Williams's Jurassic Park(among so many others!) in countless Tamil films. If nothing happens, then good for this loather. Ohterwise, bless him!

as far as i know what subbudu said at that time is, deva, at present, uses more carnatic raagas in his songs (he didn't know or didn't want to touch that deva just ctrl+c & ctrl+v -ed some famous krithis). it was true also, to some extent. during that time successful MDs incl. ARR, IR were doing songs not based on carnatic alone.
lets not see the answers alone that too partially, in an interview. Lets see the questions asked and then in which circumstances the answer is given.
moreover expecting subbudu to give a positive comment about non-carnatic based songs is expecting sachin to give a commentary in a NBA match.
but iam more an idiot, so many a gentlemen will not agree with me.

Let's talk about legal matters. How come no one has come forward to take any legal action against all the "infringement", "copy & paste", "xerox", "ctrl + c & ctrl + v" that Deva has been doing? I mean isn't there such a thing as copyright issue and such? The intellectual rights?
Any lawyers out there to shed light on this problem?

geez...everybody's so uptight...he's just giving his own version of western music. Maybe he's trying to provide the music to poor Indian families in villages who can't afford to go to Spencer Plaza and buy western music tapes that are so expensive. :)
Leave it be...he'll be out of the music composing business in a year. Oh...and Travis, go do something with your life rather than trying to contact Los Angeles Film Music Union. I hope you have better things to do than this.

Well, Deva in his own right of mind doesn't have the right to decide if he can steal music from another composer or infringe a movie company's rights and giving it to the poor.
I will only be surprised if goes out of business. As long as there are dumb-ass producers(who are already settling for an Xeror music-hummer! & who don't care if their movie has music from another source), we'll be only getting trash from the trashbin.
Actually, trying to contact LA Film Music Union=hanging around in this forum...both has got same values...you know what i mean :)
It is definitely worth the time & effort.
Believe me, it is one of the better things to do in life.

Yeah I agree with most of what Travis says. In fact I get this same yeacky feeling whenever I watch Anu Malik on screen. Its a really bad feeling. But surprisingly, the song 'merke uditha sooriyanai' from Citizen has grown on me and I quite like it now. However, I cant stand the indian version of sasha's so lonely, as 'i like you'....its horrible.
Now that I like the merke song, will anyone tell me where its copied from? I'm sure I cannot like any original composition by Deva! :-)

I agree with Travis that filing a complaint about Deva's plagiarism is a worthwhile effort. If Deva is so concerned about bringing western music to those who don't have the means/money to listen to it, why can he not do the same with prior permission obtained from the original producers of the music? I live in the US and was watching Zee TV on cable in the presence of an American friend, when the hindi song 'Oye Oye' was played on the channel!! Natuarally it caused me a lot of embarrassment in trying to explain to my American friend that Indians don't always copy American music!!! Though the song that caused me embarrassment was not one of Deva's, it won't be too long when I inadvertantly play one of his songs in front of some American and get embarrassed by that as well!!!
Deva, Anu Malik and a score of other so-called music directors should be imprisoned for their blatant illegal plagiarism!!! If that doesn't sound harsh enough, a good form of punishment would be to make Deva listen to Anu Malik's compositions and vice versa!!!!

Well its also really stupid that here in Canada, we still....correction....they still like his movie, and here we are bombarded with English songs everyday. Hello??? Does anybody do anything abt it?? Well, at least Travis is thinking abt it.
In this forum we are always critizing ARR but just realize at least he is way better than Deva. Why not appreciate that?

In the case of ARR to, the lifts or reusage of some loops that we critisize about, might actually be a legal one. He uses beats and tunes that are commercially available most times. And any one can use it. And the possibility is that we listen to a version of a westen song ,find the resemblance to it to a tamil song and we bash ARR that he has copied. Actually it might have been that the so called original english song would have also had the same commercial component in it. The classsic example is that small portion of the Mukaabla song. That part was commecially available with some name called Rythmic Beats of DR. ALban (Correct me if I am wrong). I don't find any thing wrong in using like this. It's like programming with ActivX components.

What an explantion? (Active-X). It is not copying but only instantiating the re-usable components. Wow. Only difference is small number of active-x components can be reused (license free). Not sure whether that is the case with Dr Albans :) Neverthless liked the comparision. Agree or not is different.

deva is annoying i agree and somethimes he can cause you a head ache when you want ot listen to something good. but we cant forget the fact that his strength is with ganna music and not with th eother stuff. I'm actuallly lking the songs from citizen except for I like you, it not too bad either. Maybe its because the tami industries staandards are so low and there are not many good music directors out there that we ahve a music recycling problem.

There's this so called film music composer in India
who seems to use the soundtrack CD music of John

Indian movie-goers who are not familiar with Hollywood
composers or their works, will definitely think its
this guy's hard earn impressive works.
I honestly think that he may not have gotten any
license or approval to use these music. Its not only
the above-mentioned stuff but he has used so many
other Hollywood music as well.
I just thought that such thieves ought to be reported
and taken action. Please feel free to contact me or
ask for the titles of movies where these music has
been used in.
