Is Art amoral? Do Artists have to be role models?

This topic came out of a good debate that began in the "Is Vairamuthu better than Kannadhaasan?" thread. By the time this debate got going most people had abandoned the thread and it was limited to just two people. I would love to hear how others feel about artists and morality.

  I was off the web for 8 hours, and Udhaya pulled it off into a separate thread, and look
  at this! Such an outpour! I dont even have the
  time to read so much now!
  
  I would like to add one line : I see the discussion
  taking the line of should an artist be judged or not. The original question we put was -
  'should an artist be disciplined or extra responsible?' My personal feeling is:
  Society should give extra privilege to an artist
  and excuse his short comings AND artists must
  be aware of their special influence and strive
  to be more responsible.
  Please note that
  there is no conflict here.
  
  To be more precise, as a member of the society
  I should be lenient towards artists and understand their being swayed by their art,
  but as an artist myself, I should be harsh on
  myself and discipline myself and count my
  transactions for value it adds to society.
  
  For, one thing, I believe that every thought or
  message has a value only to the extent we apply to ourselves and two, I dont believe in
  any art that does not seek to improve the happiness, understanding and long term values of life like love, friendship, peace and fun.
  
  If this criteria is not placed, snuff videos will
  become acceptable and even popular.

  ';current' and archives, you can maintain an area called 'general topics' or non-TFM topics.

  Folks, Check out the July-August issue of Utne Reader (a great magazine). There are two articles("Disordered Brilliance", and "The Art of Genius") in there that deal with the different brain structures of artists and other geniuses compared to the average Joe.   Iam totally fed up with these type of response.How can anyone read these type of writing Tamil words in English without translating?.It is very difficult to read and their slang is an absurd.Why all of you doesn't know what decent response?.You people think that this is the place to post your fungused mind feelings.Because of that, this page looks like a dustpin with bad look.
