Length of Pallavi - How does it affect a Song?

Is there a correlation between a song's popularity and the length of a pallavi?

In the 80's and early 90's, we had songs with really short pallavis. Most of Ilaiyaraaja's songs had just 4 lines of pallavi. With the advent of Rahman, the pallavis have become longer and longer... the longest one I know of is "Maayaa Machindra" from Indian.

Let's discuss how the Pallavi's length affects a song.

  I guess the longer the pallavi, the less chance of the full pallavi being repeated in between the song. I don't know of any ARR or T. Rajendar song where the pallavi and the anupallavi have been sung in the middle of the song. Now, these are two guys that are apt to have lengthy pallavis/anupallavis.

  Some long pallavi songs
  
  1. Kadhal rojaavae (Roja)
  2. Thirakkaadha kaattukulley (En Swasakkaattrey)
  3. Kandukondaen Kandukondaen (KK)
  4. Ale Ale (Boys) - this one's pretty long

  Most of MSV songs are stretched out, Pallavi focussed than Charanam magical twisting and turning. Long and well balanced. Best eg.: Neela Nayangangalil (what a melodious song)
