Bharathi Raja- Illayaraja chemistry..

Champions hunt in pairs. Illayaraja and Bharathi Raja proved a deadly combination. They had a wonderfuly chemistry going on between them. Bharathi Raja should admit some of the best songs ever composed in Tamil are from his movies. All of them composed by Illayaraja. Inspite of the split between them i feel they entertained us to no limit. Some of the haunting hits from them

I don't think any other Director-MD combination have been as successful. One might think of Maniratnam-ARR. But Illayaraja produced memorable music for Maniratnam during the early part of his career. That will cancel out. Ex. Pagal Nilavu, Idhya Kovil, Naygan, Mouna Raagam, Anjali, Idhyathai Thirdathe, Agni Natchatiram. Is there any better combo that you can come up with?

  BGM is a strong point for Illayaraja. ManiRatnam really enjoyed his success with an excellent BGM from Illayaraja. Talking about BGM and combo one should not forget Illayaraja-Fazil Combo.

  all had wonderful music in it. Sundarrajan made his mark in tamil movies with the help of Illayaraja in the movies Payanangal Mudivathillai, Vaidegi Kathirundal, Naan Padum Paadal, Udhya Geetham(if i am right). Ramarajan's karagattakkaran's success was hugely dependent on IR's music. One way or the other most of the directors and actors in the late 70s and 80s should be thankful to Illayaraja. No one has dominated Tamil Music in a given period as much as Raja did. How the hell he could come up with so many wonderful tunes? Sridhar used Illayaraja in Thendrale Ennai Thodu and Illamai Oonjaldukirathu. Both were super hits. If you add viswanathan's Salangai Oli, Chippikkul Muthu, balachander's Sindhu Bhairavi,Unnal Mudiyum Thambi,Punnagai Mannan you get a clear picture how creative Illayaraj had to be. He had to cover the entire spectrum of music. From Folk music(Karagattakaran) to Carnatic (Sindhu Bhairavi). I am not comparing IR with anybody. IMHO he is the yardstick for other MDs.

  I just want to mention one more thing. On December 31, 1999, there was a program in SUN TV for the music of 20th Century. They praised SPB,SJ,Jesudass, Mano, Chitra,Swarnalatha, etc. They didn't mentioned anything about IR till the end. Then at the end, it was said that 'IR is the behind for all theses people success'. It is really true. Without IR, there is no tamil cine field. Whether you like his music or not, this is the fact. But the beauty is still the IR majic is contuning in this field. Any director who wants to give good movies are going behind him. (Kamal, Bala, etc.). So, IR and Tamil Cine field cannot be seperated.
