Class vs Mass!

In this forum or in general we keep throwing around these terms in various contexts. I am curious, what is the difference between a class song and a mass song? When does a song achieve a class song status that is? eg. If a lot of people like a song does it become a mass song? or vice-versa a class song. Song like Oh podu.. is termed a mass song and song like vellai pookkal.. is termed a class song. What is the funda here?
