City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra to Collaborate with Bollywood Star
Birmingham's bid to be crowned European Capital of Culture 2008 has received a major boost from the biggest name in the Indian music industry.
A R Rahman, yesterday announced details of a collaboration with the world famous City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra.
The Bollywood superstar will compose an orchestral piece, which will receive its world premiere in July, 2004, and conduct an autumn concert for the CBSO featuring his Bollywood film music.
"It was while I was at the Birmingham Film and Television Festival 2000 that I met people involved in the music industry in Birmingham and was encouraged to write a piece with the CBSO," he said.
"I love the different cultures that Birmingham has and this collaboration provides a bridge between the East and West nations at an important time in history. I chose Birmingham because of its rich diversity and the friendly people.
"I would very much like to see Birmingham become Capital of Culture — it seems to be the only place in Britain where different cultures live happily alongside each other."
As well as a year-long festival of arts and sport in 2008, winning the European culture crown is expected to kick-start an economic boost worth at least £150 million and to create more than 10,000 jobs.
The orchestral work will be based on The Conference of the Birds , a 12th century Persian poem by Farid Uddin Attar from Nishapur.
A R Rahman will also be conducting projects involving young people in a continuing collaboration with the CBSO between now and Birmingham's intended year as European Capital of Culture in 2008.
Rahman has achieved superstar status through his Bollywood music and is reported to be the world's biggest selling living artist — with more than 40 million albums of his own and many more tapes of film music sold.
His first major work outside India was for Andrew Lloyd Webber, writing the score for the West End musical Bombay Dreams — which is now set to open on Broadway.
Andrew Lloyd Webber said: "A R Rahman is nothing short of a melodic genius. It has been thrilling to watch London theatre-goers embrace Bombay Dreams with such fervour."
After starting to learn the piano, aged four, Allah Rakha Rahman started work as a keyboard player, aged 11.
Following a teenage musical career, he earned a scholarship to Trinity College of Music in Oxford and a degree in Western classical music.
He made a name for himself back home in Chennai, southern India, writing and producing advertising jingles, but his career took off writing music for Indian blockbuster films.
He said: "Art is the only way to transcend our different cultures and I am very excited to be involved in this project. I will be composing the piece over the next six months between Birmingham, New York — where Bombay Dreams goes to Broadway — and my present home in Madras."

MSV is a Harmonia petti thatha meant for linking santha kavis for Sivaji and MGR.So he is an outcast as far as Royal Chennai Philharmonic stuff.
But IR is the WCM trained ,supposed be the Asian answer to Gorecki (I shall take a 20th century WCM composer) even Debussy.But the pricking question is WHERE IS THAT ANSWER?This "Kandavar Vidilar,Vindavar Kandilar"has gone a bit too far!
1.Without a symphony in hand why HCIRF go bersek to malign other s attempts ?
2.IR with his reportire why not come out with another symphony in 10 years thru a "Safe"recording company which takes care of musical interests!!!
BBC debacle???You mean the case where Dr.Vijay played the Bihari Politician ransacking the polls?Last we saw him sweeping the BBC polls with a broom!

Since, I saw your pseudonym OSIG, you have been my old man of this forum. I have learnt a lot about tamil film music from you. I have diligently followed every posts of yours, which have been mainly in the SOTD thread.
When Dr Vijay swept with a broom, the BBC polls, why did you employ the Hoover to counter?
It intrigues me, that you so knowledgeable, would descend to counter 'anything' related to IR. You may think that he has been branded as the Asian answer for Gorecki or Debussy. I wonder where you got that idea from? I have very often wondered whether you are more keen than the rest to hear the 'Grand Symphony' of IR played by the Royal Phil...!!! Such is your vehemance that when it is ever released, I am waiting to read your opinions of the same!!!

I am happy that you are one of the few in this forum who offers the essential balance to the extremism of the HCIRFs. It seems that your war is only against HCIRFs rather than IR himself. Or am I wrong in assuming this, knowing your loyalty to MSV!!? and your secondary loyalty to ARR! I don't expect you to answer this unless you are keen!!!

True,meet HCIRF s fire with fire is the idea,but unfortunately IR himself becomes a collateral damage during some of the exchanges!Sorry about that.I am still and will remain a Pre 82-IR fan and a Hardcore TFM fan.

I wish you go thru the BBC polls thread.I was against both the broom and the Hoover.Infact i expressed my choice as Beatles....Imagine!

Rahman scores symphony or not!,
Till date every tamil music fan has made the "symphony" scoring look or sound like a joke.
Writing a Symphony is not going to the saravana bhavan and having a mulagai vadai.
Technically it is very hard to write a symphony.
The taught of it is itself terrifing for composers,
A person from some remote indian village had guts to think about it and now one more person thinks about it, a good thing to indian music in general,
however bottom line it is not like writing from Ganga science guide or Konar tamil notes. Needs tons of knowledge whom so ever composes it,
bottom line 99% here dont know what symphony is all about, they just post something for their past time, a great quality of tamilians world wide., btw: i am proud to be one among them.
