Haunting Songs.

Hai Guys.
I was listening to the Song "Pon Veliyile
from Yathramozhi. It took me to an entirely different world. Just Haunting. Especially the Charanam of the song. And also the violin background that accompanies the voice in charanam. The interludes. The beginning.Out of the world. I was kind of interested in knowing about the songs that have haunted you and still continuing to do so. Sadly, we don't come across many such songs these days.
Here goes my list:
1. Kizhakkale Keralisatham from NAttuppura Pattu (the tune).
2. Idhayam Poguthe.. (ask Madhan).
3. En Iniya Pon Nilave...( Do I need to tell?)
4. Kannan Vandhu Padugindran Kalamellam...

Fellow Df-ers, can you tell me about the songs that have really affected you only because of the Music and not because of the lyrical content or any ohter factor ? . PLease do share some experiences. Some Nostalgia.

  the 'emotional impact' songs make me feel that way only when I listen to them. once the song is over, the feeling is gone, and I move over to the next song.
  
  but the 'haunting' one remains in my memory; whenever I think of it, I just go back to the time-frame when it made an impact on me. I dont even have to listen to it often, just the thought will do. It may be called nostalgia, but not exactly the same.
  
  I'm unable to describe further, but I believe that's how I differentiate these two catogories.

  The oldest Tamil song that "haunted" me was "Ponaal pogattum podaa....", especially the humming by MSV. Another haunting song that I liked was "Gnyaapagam illaiyo....." from MALARGALEI MALARURGAL - music by Gangai Amaran. There are two slightly different versions of this song, a duet and a solo. It is the solo version that has the haunting effect. Most of my other favourites have been listed already.

  GV, somehow I feel MSV's voice has that haunting quality. Today I happened to listen to 'Allah Allah' from Muhammed Bin Tughlak. The opening humming 'Allaaaahu Akbar Allaaaaah' was very haunting and I sat listening to the song more initmately and completely for the first time, and yes, it's now one of my favourites!

  karthi: I agree. MSV's voice has that haunting quality. Most of his songs were for special situations in movies where the "haunting" added a special effect. BTW, "Allah Allah..." is the first MSV solo in a Tamil movie that I have heard. Has he sung any other songs before that? (I mean complete solo song, not just the humming).

  I heard "Allah Allah" was supposed to have been sung by Mohd. Rafi. Owing to some reasons, he couldnt fly down...so MSV went on to sing it.

  I forgot to add "Bhoopalam Isaikkum" in the list. What a song!! The orchestration was just magical. The piano playing with the vocals... Takes you to the seventh heaven. If you ask me, these kind of songs help you to a very great extent to recall your childhood friends and the times you had with them. Not to mention your brother or sister. I remember seeing this movie with my family, and this song used to be played in the radio. Infact, I think we used to have this cassette. Me and my brother used to like this song a lot. The tune is just too good. I think it is based on the Raga Keeravani( Correct me if I'm wrong, I'm not a genius like Geetha).
  
  Even now, when I listen to this song, I close my eyes and remember me and my brother as small kids, having fun, with no worries in life. I think we all should thank IR for his contributions of joy in our life.
  
  Another song is "Vaa Vaa Anbe" from Agni Nakshathiram. Set in Sivaranjani, it gives you some kind of a feeling as you listen to it. Not happiness, it gives you dream like as though you were a rich and a hansome person, who is singing for his girlfriend, someone like Aishwariya Rai. The song is rich and romantic. The best way to describe it is HIGH CLASS. You start thinking of all the girls you'd have 'Sighted" in life. You get the best effect when you think of the girl you were attracted to, during the period this movie was released. Shut down all the lights and listen to this song, and then tell me.
  
  Another song is " Oru Poongavanam" from the same movie. Again a High-class song, but the best part is the second interlude..
  the piano supported by the violins.. WOW!!
  IR should take all the credit for making a person get attracted to a song just by the interlude, no matter how the words are, or who sings it. ( But these days its better if he avoids having his daughter singning many of his songs).

  the IR song that has haunted me the most is "Uravenum pudhiya vaanil" from Nenjaththai Killathe. Man, that song kills me every time i hear it.

  The songs which really haunts me is the song from the movie
  1)amaithipadai-vetri varudhu(title song)especially the interlude before the second stanza which really makes you stand up.
  2)innarul tharum anna poorani-song from the movie athma sung by t.n.seshagopalan(carnatic vocalist)this song also just takes you to that particular situation in the movie

  from Poonthalir? It is an amazing song
  which haunts me everytime I get to

  Poonthalir incidentally has some other great

  the humming in the prelude of 'diveega raagam' is really haunting. IR uses that humming effectively
  in the BGM of the film in several scenes whenever Kamal thinks of Deepa. similiar to what IR did in hey ram where he repeats the tune of nee paartha
  whenever Kamal thinks of Rani.

  How about "Putham Puthu Kalai" from Alaigal
  Oyvathillai? It is a fantastic song which
  haunts me everytime I hear it. IR can bring
  out the full emotions in any song by his
  music(especially the interludes) as pointed
  out by Vimal.
  
  I was hearing this song today.
  
  Also in Poonthalir, the song "Raja Ilam
  Raaja Poonthalire" sung by PS is an haunting
  one and it reminds me of the comfortable,
  unforgettable time I had (everyone has that
  I guess which is treasured for the whole of
  life time) during my childhood days.
  Almost all the songs in Poonthalir make
  me feel like that(childhood nostalgia).

  the interlude in the song asaya kathula thoothu vittu(the fute piece continued by the chorus)really haunts you,also the song in 'idaya kovil'vanuyarntha solayaile ne natantha pathai ellam'the beginning od the song(the santoor piece)which givces you a really haunting feeling
