Though IR has ruled the Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam film music, he couldn't make a big mark in Hindi films eventhough he got some good opportunties.

Is it big because he failed in selecting singers / lyrics writer when he re-used his south indian hits in Hindi (ARR is very good in this).

Was too busy carrying the whole industry in south and had no time, need or motivation to go to Mumbai settle there and want to make it big there

Whatever Hindi films IR did were dubbed ones and I have heard that IR is not even physically present during recordings. His assistants do the execution part(choice of singers etc). IR is indifferent when packaging comes. He's a great composer(creator) but not a good implementor

vaseegara, you seem to have a very very little knowledge about IR and his music and music in general. I want you to listen to all IR songs in the last 25 years before you pass any comments about his music.

Chochan, IR's music is heavily based on carnatic ragas. Northies are used to bangra and hindustani kind of music. IR's sadma and kamagni songs were amazing but went unnoticed. IR was not given enough opportunities in hindi to prove himself. He has a class. Hindi film music world could not recognize him or his music because their taste is different.

The best thing about IR song is the nativity. I would love to hear "Mudhal Mariyadhai" kind of songs with Tamil Man vasanai and not with vada indhia man vasanai (I love to listen to lots of Ghazals n Hindustani music as well). When the movies are made in multiple languages, I feel the songs (and also the picturisation) loose the nativity bit of the song, ofcourse Roja songs were good in Hindi too. I happened to watch one of Barathiraja's movie (I think Tajmahal or something like that...it is a crap)...I was so surprised "Was he the one who directed Mudhal Mariyadhai?". I agree with what Philospher said.

x, I think you have a point. Probably that's why many of us Southies put down the works of Hindi MDs. What they're used to is different from what we're used to, so there you go. I must say though, there are several Hindi MDs that have given good songs enjoyable by Southies as well as Northies, e.g., Rajesh Roshan, Jatin-Lalit, and of course, ARR, RDB, and above all, Salil Chowdary.

Becoming big in Bollywood isnt the only thing. There are several music directors who stuck to regional languages though they had the talent to make it big nationally. And because of them, the music of regional languages flourished. So people like IR stuck to Tamil despite being successful in Bollywood. Bhupen Hazaarkia stuck to Bengali and Assamese, Avinash Vyaas stuck to Gujarati, Sudhir Phadke and Hridaynath stuck to Marathi films. There are many many such examples. And had they all gone to Bollywood, the regional languages would have lost a great deal.

So, IMVHO, instead of debating why IR did not go to Bollywood (I do wish he had done more Hindi films nonetheless!), lets admire his music in Tamil films, which is hitherto unmatched in the whole wide world!

There is nothing special about bollywood.Our film industry is technically supreme than bollywood.FYI.. when sony engineers were under the decision making of launching their CD manufacturing division .. they were shown the movie Thalapathi by G.V films. I have read this article in India today once.After seeing the sound quality they were very happy to launch their production unit.This only made sony entertainment in the later on stage to produce their first Indian film in tamil.Kadhal Kavithai .. i don't need to tell who is the music Director of that movie none other than Isaignani.Then u guys would have known the world beauty contest conducted by ABCL. At that time they were looking for a genius to compose music for that big event. The legend actor Amithabh's one and only choice was Raja only at that time.ABCL knew that Raja is the only man who can give such a best combo that portrays our culture and the modern world.The music for that event was celebrated by all the viewers.So this clearly evident u guys that he is not a native MD.C shivaji .. the actor of the millinium .. never acted in hindi movies and moreover he is not ineterested in that.It doesn't meant that he is a regional actor.He may not be known to a lot of northies.. but he is still considered as the best actor ever produced by Indian film Industry. Ilayaraja,Kamalhasan... and there are so many people they love our cine industry and always they have a desire to make our industry big.They did it.

Yeah Bala. If a colossal like IR is not utilized properly in Bollywood, it is their loss . We have been lucky atleast till mid 90'S.

I agree with av. When I was in Bombay, I used to talk with Sudhir Phadke's son Mr. Sridhar Phadke. Even Sridhar Phadke was doing music for a few Marathi movies and around that time, he won an award as well. He used to feel the same (Whatever AV said) about doing music for Hindi movies.

With no rhetoric in my tone, I want to ask you why do you think this condiction has come?

It is only now that you see so many IR bashers who openly bash IR (even though not to the extend of how ARR was bashed/being bashed).

See, I am here in this forum for almost 2 years...yes I am....and believe me....upon every new ARR release or ARR news there will be tens of posts bashing ARR, threads opened in numbers to belittle him...with no reason or rhyme...

Its just I think is a pay back time.....indead of criticising the performance they all criticised the performer...now they are getting it in return...

Or else...is it my fate to write any thing about JG in some threads...

I will never mind what IR does or what he composed..whether its ahit or flop...had many people here have left ARR also that way...but no...instead of basing PP they bashed ARR ...bashed ARR instead of critrising BABA...
well let them suffer now.
