Two instances spring to my mind :
1) Blatant lifting - eg. Deva in Aasai - song ??I can't recall the words but the drum rhythms and and some of the interludes were directly lifted from Genesis's "Mama".
2) A colleague who knew some of ARR's buddies told me about how ARR was influenced by Sting and in eg. he pointed out the "Mustafa" song - the singing style he said was similar to Sting.
This brought to my mind "Vande Mataram"...the tune itself (vande mataram part) was a bit similar to Sting's "If I ever lose my faith in you"...IR too I'd heard from a friend was influenced by bossa nova and spanish rhythms - the song "En Iniya Pon Nilave" - the guitar melodies are said to be inspired from spanish melodies..

Can you cite any more such instances ?
