Let us take a peek at future trends and style of film making for Tamil in 2004. The star system is crumbling and what will sell this year is good story with innovative presentation, style in narration and newness in characterisation.
The target audience will be the youth from 18 to 25 years who look forward to wholesome entertainment for two and a half hours. So young heroes like Dhanush, Surya, Simbu, Ravi, Srikanth, Siddharth, Silambarasan and Jeevan are going to be hot and happening in 2004.
This Pongal will decide the fate of veterans like Kamalhassan, Vijaykanth, Sarath Kumar with films like Virumaandi, Engal Anna and Gambheeram. And with the advent of Tamil New year and summer, the report card will be out on the seniors when G, Gilli, Ayutha Ezhuthu and Arul hits the screens. Vijay, Ajit, Madhavan, and Vikram will have to constantly reinvent themselves to stay at the top.
In a male dominated industry, heroines hardly count as no heroine can make or break a film. They often have to play second fiddle to the heroes and at the same time try not to be overexposed or be stereotyped. Take the case of Kiran who was finished in a year’s time, after did couple of item numbers which sealed her fate. Today no hero worth his salt will do another film with her. The moral of the story is that Mumbai girls with greed in their eyes should pick and choose their roles with care.
In 2003, all the top directors were in as bad form as Sachin Tendulkar in Australia! This has created a situation where no young star is willing to work with such veterans. One-time box office kings like Bharathiraaja, Vikraman, Maharajan and others are fading out while new directors with a lot of new ideas like Selvaraghavan, Gautham Menon, Subramaniam Siva, Hari, Karu Palaniyappan and M.Raja are hot.
