Can music groups emerge like in USA??

We know there are music groups like Beatles, BackStreet Boys, Nsync, etc., Why not we can have similar groups. For example IR can start giving albums independent of movies composing himself with singers like SPB, Mano, etc., This would encourage the music industry to come up with original and competitive music. The advantages are encouraging competition to give out good music and more probability for talented people to pursue their dream and become successful.

  Raj,
  You have started a good topic and I hope many people participate and air their views.Here's mine-
  
  1) It costs a lot to produce an album. Right now only people making movies can afford it (basically, the movie profits subsidise it). This is THE main reason now.
  
  2) Market maturity - It looks like people need a context to enjoy the song. Movies help in this. We are not a mature audience to give importance to the lyrics/emotion/musical style etc. I am talking about the majority here and there is some generalistion here.
  
  3) Musical diversity/Music culture. Our society is change-resistant and traditional/conservative. This does not encourage new styles/experimentation. But there is surely some change because of the buying power of the youth. Songs like in alaipayuthe (carnatic+pop beat) would have been unwelcome a few years back.
  
  4) Economic potential - people do not have money to buy cassetes/CDs. As tape recorders/CD players are costly. Basically, media sales for an album may not justify the costs involved. This is basically a corollary of #1.
  
  I would be happy to see more discussions and arguments for/against my theories.

  There are two parts to the topic:
  
  1) Music Groups playing largely their own creations
  2) Independent Albums
  
  There are tons of examples for item no. 2).
  How to name it?, NBW, Daler Mehndi's Bolo Tararara, DM's ThuNuk thuNuk thuN, Alisha Chinoy's Made in India, Anuradha Sriram's Chennai Girl.....are examples from various genres. With today's advent of "Home Studios" the expense part has also been greatly diminished.
  
  The first one is more challenging because it calls for a change in audience acceptance. We (Indians) are largely a cinema-crazy audience and accept songs together with the fantasy of Aish, Ramba, Ajith, Shah Rukh etc. To accept indigenous groups outside the medium of cinema is still a major challenge.

  We dont need to follow exactly what Americans do. But, we can see the merits of the idea. By modifying according to our culture, and following, we can see where it would lead us.
  
  In one way or other, this idea has already been pursued.
  
  1) Bakthi Padalghal, by TMS, Veeramani, Siva Chidambaram, etc.,
  2) Although in Bombay many groups(similar to what RajaG mentioned), to some extent it became a failure mainly because of following every minute step of what has been done in USA.
  3) Carnatic Keerthanas(like Balamurali Krishna and other Telugu Carnatic artists).
  
  I would like to seek here, a more succesful way of performing these types of independent Albums.
  
  For example, say Vani Jeyaram sings in IR music with lyrics composed by people like Vali or Vairamuthu. In fact, at one instant one can see irrespective of movie producer or director's requirement(about 50% they would introduce double meaning), these artists can freely do their job by talking among themselves to come out with best album.
  
  Why not if MSV today does that with SPB, Vani Jeyaram, etc., isnt there would be people willing to buy. Right now, people are more ready to accept changes than in old days. Because through internet and TV they are being exposed to various cultures. So, my opinion is that given a successful way of doing this as acceptable to our culture, we can still do it. May be producers and directors would buy copyright to play some of these songs from independent albums in their movies.

  Private albums in pop and English-Hindi rock genres have already taken off immensely in India. To gain acceptance for independant artists, promotion is the key! These independent artists/bands should hit the college circuit, gain some exposure in youth oriented mags and take their stuff to some popular cable channels.
  
  Of course, themes will have to be dynamic, fresh and a lot more liberal than most regional soundtracks allow. The day isn't far when independant artists take the medium, the trend has already been set with public acceptance of new voices.
