What made IR to go for WCM

I do not know if any TFM page available for this. Going by the initial days of IR (Village,Communist background), its amazing that he wanted to specialise in WCM. At that point of time, no other MD did that,neither film songs based in WCM. Is this something he did after joined GK Venkatesh or Dhanraj. Can someone elaborate.
