IR'S experiments ..

ob'ly ... not his expmnts. with ragas which must be in hundreds ... I am talking about more general and innovative experiments ...let me start in the thread ...

  In the Kaiveesum thamarai song mentioned above (in movie Kairaasikkaran) the second interlude starts with strings sections (flowing music) along with 2 other instruments playing the same theme with a phase lag (one following the other) leading to a shocking change of mood using a staccato instrument ( as usual the director miffs up the scene)
  
  YEs I had ignored this song when it had come first. After becoming crazy of Ilay's music I'm in the habit of going to a recording studio and completely abandon my sense of choice and just record anything and everything associated with Ilay. This was one such a GEM. Nilavondru kanden is decent , but does not give me the same high as the second interlude of Kaiveesum

  Raghavan, very interesting. i was enchanted first by kaiveesum thamarai, eagerly waitin for the second interlude!!!!! and the song on the whole continues to baffle. but then, wait then comes Theyn sumandhum pillai thana (SPB), which was only the song i was fascinated fromt he movie, when it was released because of the imaginative prelude and second interlude. but i was always was not happy with the beginning of the stanzas it seemed flawed, so this is one of few ilayaraja songs that i find flawed. and lo i discover the other 2 songs in the movie in a casette of recorded that i had put aside for years. but, the 3rd song fascinates me the most, which is Nilavu onrdu kanden.... look at the syncopated beats and the prelude and both the interludes, forget these, look at the stanzas. And, this one was the song i listened to the last after spendin a lot of my time on Kaiveesum Thaamarai. Very brilliant compositions. my feeling is, a lot of songs of IR's are discovered only after increasing your level of appreciation after listening to larger quantities and varities of music over a long time. that explains why i am able to appreciate those two songs only now and not earlier!!!

  kaiveesum thamarai is a fantastic song. Listen to the bass line in this song !! This sort of melody+'rhytmic harmony' is something only IR can do. nilavonRu is similar in style but I too agree kaiveesum beats it. On a good audio system IR songs are really fantastic (where you can hear the bass and the system has enough resolving power to showcase the instruments separately).

  Thanks Pal, for mentioning my beloved songs. I would make u happy mentioning the song
  "Endharo Mahaanubhaavulu" from Ashoka Chakravarthy(balakrishna, Bhanupriya).
  This song has fantastic sannayi bit in the before the first charanam.
  "Bulli Pitta" is my pick of Chinaraayudu. Also it signifies Maestro's calibre of "writing" a different composition for the same song in a sad note. There, mellifluous flute dominates, as it ever happens usually.
  
  There is also a sannayi bit in "Yamaho nee yama yama andham" in Jadeka veerudu.......but short lived.

  Hi Prashanth,
  The "endharo.." is my favourite in that movie.
  also check out the songs "lagi jigi.." from Jamadhagni(telugu) , "Nannee lokam.."from Kirathakudu and "Oh my love.."from Swathi chinukulu, in the recent CD released. Absolutely fantastic music for all three songs. The interludes are mindblowing and are way ahead of their time at the time of their composition.
  
  Writing the same song in a sad note and arrangement of music for both versions, there are other fantastic songs. like
  1. The song "Enneno andalu" and "O prema .." from chanti ( chinna thambi), (both versions are super hit!)
  2. "Chukkalanti ammayi..." from Abhinandana(telugu)
  3. "Priyathama..." from Priyathama(telugu)
  
  We don't get to see successful experiments like these nowadays. I think MSV and KVM also had a nick for such songs, but IR was the best.

  The song Siriya Paravai from Andha Oru Nimidam (1985). Here is how the song proceeds. The prelude of the song is in A minor1. The pallavi, however, is in Charukesi with E as the tonic note. The first interlude is again in A minor, while the first charanam uses the minor scale without Dha. In the second interlude we revert to Charukesi, a fact brought to the fore by the swara-singing of the chorus. The charanam that follows is vintage Charukesi and uses a different structure from the first charanam. Raaja then employs a third charanam, which has the same structure as the first charanam. What is going on? Taking the Ma of Charukesi as the Sa yields Gowrimanohari. Thus the alternation between A minor and Charukesi in E amounts to modal shifts of tonic. The whole song has the structure of two alternating ragams —a third charanam in this song somehow provides a certain symmetry to the whole. To my knowledge, such maneuvers were unprecedented in film music. Wonderfully melodious as the end result was, it was the experiment of a brash young composer. Almost a decade later, when Raaja returned to this raga-pairing, it was in a much more somber setting.
  
  I got this from Raajangham page. What a beauty you should listen to that duet Balu and Janu were class.
  
  In Ninaivellam Nithya Panivizhum malarvanam has a classic tabla beat at the end of the charanam(1st and 2nd). has a class by itself. only that has the tabla in the whole song.
  
  Usage of drums in one charanam and tabla/mridangam in the second has also been done in many songs, like
  
  "Oh vasantha raaja" and "Mata rani mounamidhi".

  Jag "Urakalai Godavari" and "Nee Meeda Naaku Idayyo" are my favorite songs composed by IR and sung by SPB and SJ. Please tell me which movie is this.

  Meera,
  "Urakalai Godaavari.." is from Abhilasha. Check out other classics from this movie.("banthi chamanthi", "sande poddula") (stg:Chiranjeevi, Radhika)
  "Nee meeda naaku ..." is from Raakshasudu another chiranjeevi starrer. Another classic from Raaja.(esp: "malli malli idi raani..", "accha accha..", "hai naughty..")

  IR claimed that music should have no purpose!!! I just came acrosss some scientists beliefs about genes, life and theology. some parallel.

  there is something so different about poomalaiye from pagal nilavu-unbeleivable orchestration.i can imagine the releif of orchestra once IR okayed this song,can anyone explain what is different-has IR used two different ragas as counterpoint in charanam-he will be singing in a seperate way and janakim chips in with 'ennai unakkendru koduthen...' but the total effect is amazing.

  Pagal nilavu was not dubbed, But remade in telugu - Arjun acted in that, I don't remember the film name and who was the MD, But all songs were exactly same as tamil tunes., They even dubbed the movie in tamil as 'Enga ooru raja' or something - So we do have two versions of pagal nilavu songs in tamil !!

  In Kutti, as the first flashback starts, the sound of bells that IR has used are different from the normal temple bell sound we hear. But then, it jells so well with the scene that many hardly notice it.
  
  He has used similar sound in Azhagi.

  To me i call IR as a scientist. i cant jus tell his magic in this small posting.......he is really strong in wat ever he does. i feel sad for those who dont know tat...
