He is brilliant. His voice range is amazing (next only to Balamurali Krishna, IMO). He was responsible for bringing in lots of youngsters to the Classical Music fold. Earlier, youngsters used to make fun when someone tried singing semi-classical music on stage. Yesudas' Tarangini records popularized classical Carnatic music and helped many a youngster learn the 'songs' off the tape. They eventually got into learning traditional music from 'Vaadhyaars' in the neighborhood.
His contribution to classical music is tremendous. I have one reservation though: He never paid good attention to lyrics and intelligent 'break-up' of words , especially when it came to pronunciation in Telugu and Kannada. Once he even used some 'nonsensical' words to fill-in th words he had forgotten in a Tyagaraja Krithi: Ninne Neera Nammi Naanura, in Pantuvarali Ragam.
Never mind.. these are minor complaints.
Hope he continues to enthrall us for many many more years! Can somebody tell me if there are notable 'Shishyas' of his on the classical scene today?

I hold his sanskrit diction to be next only to M.Subbulakhmi

Murali Shankar,
However most of the compositions of the trinity were in Telugu (except Dikshathar who was prolific in Sanskrit):-)

To answer your question about "Shishyas", Vijay, KJY's son had his public "katcheri arangetram" at a Christian Church in Kerala in December, 1998.
KJY believes and professes that music, like God, has no boundaries including that of religion.
BTW, I have several albums of KJY singing Thyagaraja krithis in "perfect" diction and pronunciation!
Another service by KJY in promoting Carnatic music is the Tharangini Music School at Thiruvananthapuram, which is a non-profit institute training youngsters in classical music.

Yes, I agree with most of the previous writers. I hva always wondered how he managed to sing cinema songs when he is so brilliant in Carnatic music. I have wondered also how he could not improve his pronunciation of "Podu lakaram". But he is fantastic. I am eager to attend his concert on I April in Singapore & I sincerely hope he will allocate a day for Carnatic music.

Hai,
I agree with your opinions. But eventhough his pronounciation is not vey correct in some songs his voice makes us to listen. It mesmorizes us.I like his songs both carnatic and cinema songs. It is difficult to keep the voice suitable for carnatic and cinema. He is doing a very good job and also encouraging younsters to become singers.

Yesudas is absolutely amazing. We Indians should be proud of having such a master in our country. His voice is tremendous and he is the person who made classical music interesting to younsters.
His contribution to classical music is unimaginable. I love to listen to his "Vaatahapi Ganapathi" with T.N.Krishna and I being a devotee of Swamy Ayyappa, I love to listen to his Harivaraasanam which is very melodious.
Regarding his pronounciation as mentioned, it is very difficult for a human being to be perfect in everything. It is actually difficult for malyalees to twist their toung and speak fluently. I have observed the slang Malyalees use. Yesudas mother toung being Malyalam, we have to appreciate his talent of singing in various languages. His songs in "Malaya Maarutha" is absolutely superb. Imagine a malyalee singing in Kannada. I am a Kannadiga and I know how tough it is to speak or sing in this laguage. So its better we do not point mistakes in artists like Yesudas that too when we do not have the talent.

i think that his voice is miles ahead of it's greatest adjective.the feeling of bakthi that he is able to bring out in his songs . his humility, his dedication to the art of carnatic music inspite of ridicule and criticism(particularly in his early years),his never ending quest for perfection.dasetta...may you live for another 100 years.

You can't level Yesudas with you or compare with anyone. His birth is something like that - once in say 1000 years. We will forget everything when we listen to his music. Such an amazing man.
I bowed my head before him.

It is his humility that I like very much in him. Although he is capable of becoming the greatest carnatic singer, he does not try to improve in terms of class and raga lakshanam. One thing, he does not listen to other carnatic singers except Chembai. Though he has learnt much from Chembai, he has to learn more. He needs to adhere to sampradaya to a large extent and not make a carnatic concert look like a football match. I'd be glad if he reads this and tries to improve in the carnatic department. In the light music side, he stands alone, no one being equal.
