During the London concert, it was very interesting to see Maestro's facial expression whenever singers missed the beat or made an obvious mistake. He made Chinmayee, Madhu Balakrishnan and Sailaja repeat certain lines after the song rendition was over. I don't think, anyone has heard of such things in a big music concert. In fact, Maestro made this particular comment several times during the concert - "We cannot fix things in a concert but could be corrected while recording in a studio". This doesn't come as a surprise to Hubbers who know Maestro's stringent conditions for 100% perfection. The truth is that Maestro was way ahead of his times and the Tamil film world even in 1977. SPB mentioned this fact very beautifully after singing "Ilaya Nila". SPB said that this musical composition, guitar notes and the tune for "Ilaya Nila" was futuristic in 1982 and the song is a hit even in 2013. SPB went on to say how a Hindi music director literally copied the same tune and delivered a bad job which speaks volumes of how Maestro composed this piece in an instant in 1982. SPB said that this song has never been rendered perfectly in any concert without sufficient rehearsals and he even took quite some years to master the flow and the rhythm of this song. Maestro didn’t like when SPB hummed during the last guitar note of this song.

Now looking back at 1982, when R Sundarajan directed the movie, he would have never thought of getting such mega hits from Maestro. I am sure, Maestro would have churned out the tune instantly or few tunes after listening to the song situation. Sundarajan would have picked one tune which went on to become the biggest hit. At the same time, many directors cannot cope up with Maestro’s way of working because they want more flexibility and control over the music director. Ratnam and Bharathiraaja are classic examples. I have just started to read Ratnam’s biographical book “Conversations with Mani Ratnam” which is a fascinating book on how Ratnam thinks and operates. There are plenty of references to Maestro and how he helped Ratnam during his beginning years in Tamil film. I will post my comments after completing the book. Ratnam’s book really gives an insight on how two creative and futuristic persons could work together.

I am sorry to say that most of the time the Maestro can't even hold his sruthi when he sings. The same goes for Yuvan. Yet, he has the audacity to embarrass singers publicly for small slip-ups. It was not as if the singers went off sruthi or missed a beat. It was in most cases a difference in singing style and that too because most of these singers were not singing their own song and probably had at most a couple of rehearsals before the concert. Maestro is one of the best composers of our time but he shouldn't behave as if he is infallible. I'm pretty sure he wouldn't try telling off Yesudas for singing certain lines in a different style for it wouldn't take long for the former to in turn tick off IR for singing off sruthi!

I quite agree with what you said. A few minor mistakes are 'sagajam' in a live show. Reproducing the feeling is more important. But enna saiya, thatha-vukku romba koham varudhu. Even SPB took permission to improvise on Sundari at the 2011 Chennai show. Adhellam too much. Raja himself originates songs spontaneously through improvisation so why shouldn't the singers try some variations as long as it doesn't disrupt the orchestra.

ஆலப்போல் வேலப்போல் பாடலை spb பாடி முடித்த பிறகு, ராஜா சாரை வாழ்த்தும் விதமாக.. இந்த பாடல் பட்டிகாட்டில் நடக்கும் பாடலாக (படத்தில்) இருந்தாலும் கசல் பாடகர்களுக்கு ஏற்ற பாடல் என்று சொல்லிவிட்டு அந்த பாடலை அப்படியே கசலாக பாடி காண்பித்தார். அப்படி spb பாடி கொண்டிருக்கும்போது தபேலா மற்றும் சில வாத்தியங்களை பின்னணியாக வாசித்தனர். கூட்டம் கிறங்கி போனது. ஆனால் இந்த விஷயங்களை ராஜா சார் ரசிக்கவில்லை. நீங்க ஏன் வாசிகறீங்க என்று கைகளால் தபேலா காரர்களை நோக்கி சைகை காட்டினார், உடனே அவர்களும் நிறுத்திவிட்டனர். மேடைக்கு அருகில் நான் இருந்ததால் அதை நான் நன்றாக கவனிக்க முடிந்தது. .

இளையநிலா பாடலில் வரும் கடைசி கிட்டார் பிட்டை spb வாயால் பாடிவிட்டார். அதை ராஜா சார் சிரித்து கொண்டே கிட்டார் பீசையும் இவனே பாடிட்டான் என்று கூறினார்.

இவன் ஒரு ராட்சசன் என்று ராஜா சாரை spb சொன்னதையும் அவர் ரசிக்கவில்லை. தான் ராட்சசன் இல்லை என்றும் சரஸ்வதியின் பிள்ளை என்றும் கூறினார். Spb பாவம், பாராட்டும் விதத்தில் அவர் சொன்னதை ராஜா சார் ஏற்று கொள்ளாமல் மல்லுக்கு நின்றதால் வாடி விட்டார், பாவம்.

6:00 மணி நிகழ்ச்சியை 6:40க்கு தான் ஆரம்பித்தனர். 11:10 க்கு முடிந்தது.

40 பாடல்கள். ஆச்சர்யங்கள் இருந்தாலும் முந்தைய நிகழ்ச்சிகளில் பாடிய பாடல்களையும், பேசியவைகளையும் தவிர்த்திருக்கலாம். புது விஷயங்களை தருவதற்கு பதிலாக தேய்ந்த ரெகார்ட் போல அந்தி மழை பொழிகிறது பாடலுக்கு எத்தனை டியூன் போட்டார், எதை எப்படி தேர்வு செய்தார்கள் என்று ஒரே மாதிரியான கேள்வி பதில்கள் சற்று எரிச்சலை ஏற்படுத்தியது. அதே போல் கமலும் அவர் பங்குக்கு ஏ தில் தீவானஹே பாடல் எப்படி இஞ்சி இடுப்பழகா ஆனது என்று சொன்னார். இதை எல்லாம் பலமுறை கேட்டாகிவிட்டது, டிவியிலும் பார்த்து விட்டோம். முந்தைய நிகழ்சிகளை விட இதில் அந்தி மழை அழகாகவே இருந்தது சிறப்பு.

கமல் (விஸ்வரூபம் நாயகியுடன் அரங்கத்திற்குள் என்ட்ரி ஆனார்) தான் விருமாண்டி படத்தில் நடிப்பு மற்றும் இயக்கத்தில் பிசியாக இருந்த நேரத்தில், ராஜா சார் 'உன்னை விட இந்த உலகத்தில் உசந்தது யாருமில்லை" என்று முதல் அடியை எடுத்து கொடுத்து மிச்ச பாடலை எழுத வைத்ததாக சொன்னார். (இவர்கள் இனைந்து 10 ஆண்டுகளாக வேலை செய்யாமல் இருக்க வியாபாரம் மட்டும் தான் காரணமாக இருக்க முடியுமா என்பது கேள்வி குறியே.. அன்பே சிவத்திற்கு ராஜா சாரை அழைத்திருந்தால் என்னவாம்? மற்ற படங்களை கூட விட்டு விடலாம்)

கமல் இசையை ரசிக்கும் போது அவருடைய முகத்தை பார்த்திருக்கிறீர்களா? அப்படி ஒரு முகம் கிடைத்தால் பிறகு ஏன் நல்ல டியூன் பிறக்காது என்று ராஜா சார் கூறினார்.

அவருடைய பாடல்களில் வயலின்களின் ஆக்கிரமிப்பு விதயசமாக இருக்குமல்லவா? அந்த சத்தங்களை வேறு இசை அமைப்பாளர்களிடம் கேட்கவே முடியாது. நெருக்கி ஒரு 15 வயலின்கள் இந்த நிகழ்ச்சியில் இடம் பெற்றும் அதன் சப்தம் அபஸ்வரமாகவே கேட்டது. ஒட்டவே இல்லை. ஒ2 ஒலி அமைப்பு அப்படியா என்று தெரியவில்லை.

ஜெயச்சந்திரன், ராஜா சாருடனான 35 அல்லது 40 ஆண்டு கால நட்பு என்று குறிப்பிட்டு விட்டு தனக்கு மிகவும் பிடித்த பாடல் என்று காத்திருந்து காத்திருந்து பாடலை கொஞ்ச நேரம் பாடினார். பிறகு ராஜா சார் அதை நகைச்சுவையுடன், ரிகர்சல் பண்ணின பாடல்களையே இங்கு பாட நேரமில்லை, எதிர்பார்க்காமல் ஜெயச்சந்திரன் இந்த பாடலை பாடியது உங்களுக்கெல்லாம் போனஸ் என்று கூறினார். சித்திரை செவ்வானம் பாடலை அவர் பாடியதும், கோரசும் கம்பீரமான அழகு. எத்தனை முறை கேட்டாலும் அலுக்காத பாடல்.

யுவன் ஏன் பாடரான்னு தெரியலை. சாரி. பாவதாவும் அப்படியே. ஒரு கிளி உருகுதுன்னு ஆரம்பிச்ச உடனே எனக்கு தூக்கி வாரி போட்டு விட்டது. கார்த்திக் ராஜா பெட்டர். மொக்கை பாட்டாக இருந்தாலும் காசு மேலே பாட்டை கமலுடன் சேர்ந்து சிரித்து கொண்டே நன்றாக பாடினார்.

ஏறக்குறைய எல்லா பாடல்களிலும் ஜெய்ச்சாவின் பெர்கர்ஷன் எதாவது ஒருவகையில் இருந்தது. நிறைய வாத்தியங்களை அவர் வாசித்ததும், இதிலிருந்து தான் இந்த சத்தம் இந்த பாடலில் வந்ததா என்று தெரிந்ததும் ஆச்சர்யமாக இருந்தது.

மறுபடியும் சொல்கிறேன். சொர்கமே என்றாலும் மற்றும் தென்பாண்டி சீமையில் பாடல்களை ஒரிஜினல் வார்த்தைகளுடன் அழகு குறையாமல் பாடி இருந்தால் இன்னும் நன்றாக இருந்திருக்கும். Spb இவர் பாட்டை கசலில் பாடினால் கோபம் வருகிறது, மது பாலா கொஞ்சம் மெதுவாக பாடி விட்டார் என்று கோபம் வருகிறது. ஆனால் ஒரு 25 ஆண்டு காலம் ப்ரெயர் சாங்க்ஸ் போல கேட்டு பழக்க பட்ட பாடல்களை குத்தி குதறி போட்டால் கோபம் வர கூடாதா? அழகு மலராட பாடலை வேறு இசைக்கு பாடியதும் கேட்க நன்றாக இருந்தாலும் -- நாட் மீ சார், ஐ டோன்ட் லைக் இட். அவர் பாடல் தான், ஆனால் நெற்றி கண் திறப்பின்னும் குற்றம் குற்றமே...

பாடலின் வரிசையில் ஏதோ மாற்றம் செய்ய ராஜா சொல்லி அனுப்பினார். அதன் படி அடுத்த பாடலான என் இனிய பொன் நிலாவே பாடலை கார்த்திக் பாட வர வேண்டும். 1 நிமிடம் தாமதமாக அவர் வர, எல்லோரும் அவரை வரவேற்கும்படி சத்தம் எழுப்பினர். அவர் மேடைக்கு வந்ததும், ஏன்யா லேட்டா வர? பெரிய ஸ்டார் அயிட்ட இப்போ. என்னைய வெயிட் பண்ண வெச்சா பரவாயில்லை, இவங்களை எல்லாம் வெயிட் பண்ண வெக்கலாமான்னு ஜோவியலா சொன்னார். இந்த பாடலை மட்டும் தான் ரசிகர்கள் ஒன்ஸ் மோர் கேட்டனர்..அதற்க்கு நோ ரெஸ்பான்ஸ்.

நான் இருந்த பகுதியிலிருந்து நெப்போலியனை பாட சொல்லுங்கள், அருள் மொழி என்று கூக்குரல் வந்தது, அட நம்ம பெயரை யார் இங்கு சொல்வது என்பது போல் அவரும் குரல் வந்த திசையை நோக்கி பார்த்தார். யுவன் எங்கே என்று ஒரு ரசிகர் கேட்க, அதற்க்கு மட்டும் காத்திருங்கள் என்பது போல் கையை ஆடினார். வேறு எந்த ஆடியனஸ் சத்ததிற்கும் ராஜா சார் ரெஸ்பாண்ட் பண்ணவில்லை.

டெகரெசன் சூப்பர். ஆனால் மேடை அமைப்பு ரொம்ப பழைய பார்மட். யார் யார் எங்கு இருப்பார்கள் என்று நான் கெஸ் பண்ண முடிந்தது. எங்கே அமர்ந்தால் எல்லோரையும் பார்காலம், ராஜா சாரை எங்கிருந்து பார்த்தால் நன்றாக இருக்கும் என்று திட்ட மிட்டே டிக்கட் மாஸ்டரில் சீட் புக் பண்ணினேன். அது சரியாக இருந்தது. நல்ல தரிசனம்.

மற்ற ராஜ சார் நிகழ்சிகளில் எப்படி என்று தெரிய வில்லை, ஆனால் இதில் நிறைய பேர் அடிகடி வெளியில் போவதும் வருவதுமாக இருந்தனர். அது அவ்வளவு நன்றாக இல்லை.

நிகழ்ச்சி தொகுப்பாளர் திவ்யாவை மொத்த நிகழ்ச்சியில் இரண்டு முறை தான் வாய் திறந்தார், வரவேற்க மற்றும் ஸ்பான்சர்ஸ் பற்றி கடைசியில் பேச மட்டும். இதற்காக அவருக்கு டிக்கெட் போட்டு அழைத்து வந்தது வேஸ்ட்.

40 பாடலுக்கும், -- பாடலுக்கு ஒன்று என்கிற விதத்தில் அது சமந்தப்பட்ட ஒரு நிகழ்வை சொல்லி இருந்தால் எப்படி இருந்திருக்கும் என்கிற ஏக்கத்தோடு - ராஜாராம்.

With all due respect to the singers, these songs are IR 's creations and the audience have been listening to the original and fallen in love with it. when they come to hear it in a live show with IR they expect to hear the same magic being recreated for their enjoyment. This is not some personal platform for singers to try improvisations. And IR being old school is not comfortable if the original impact of those hit songs is changed in any way. I think it is totally fine since it is his own live show and he calls the shots so to say. Now if this a light music show by an orchestra then ofcourse all bets are off and singers can do anything with the way they sings the songs. But in this case IR is fully justified in his approach according to me. Now not every MD is that way but hey everyone is different so lets respect IR for who he is. After all he has pretty much earned it i think. Now if you notice he only stops the song in very few instances to correct. i have heard numerous mistakes in his previous shows for which he has not stopped the song in the middle.

I think the point was if he wants to hold up his singers to such standards, he ought to sing well too on stage. I won't comment about his son..well, he ought not to be given those songs in the first place. Yes I know IR is more of a composer than a singer but once he gets on stage to sing he will be measured by the same standards as other professional singers. And I am sorry to say he repeatedly falls short live. When he is not capable of doing justice to many of the songs live mostly due to lack of practice, he should at least accommodate the singers too a little bit. SPB has sung over 40000 songs and delivered numerous hits from amongst those for Raja, likewise Chithra. I would tend to think they know what they are doing. Have these singers not earned anything at all either?

Thinking about a MC for Maestro's concert, Prakash Raj did a good job at Chennai 2011 concert. Playing 40 songs is incredible but the audience would have received a great boost if few lines were described about the song, some memorable incidents and history of how it was composed. Why can't Maestro invite his brother Amar as MC? I remember Amar doing a great job for an old Madurai concert and the performance was made lively with his comments and wits. Amar says “Ilaiyaraaja and I may not always be on the best of terms, but the affection we share is intact". Let's see the two brothers unite again for Kamal's upcoming concert.

Rehash of putham puthu is disappointing, i was hoping for something different.

I wish he uses someone other than YSR although YSR is much better here than NEPV
