Alan, Kannan is a proper name.
It is also used as a pet name - for babies, younger children as well as older lovers.
The name brings a warm feeling, which is so inexplicable. Tamil film's best lyricist/poet even named himself as a servant of Kannan. No prizes for guessing his name :P
I dont know about Malayalam, but the letter N in the name Kannan has a different sound from the normal N and thus my claim of uniqueness.

In hindi the name 'Kana' is used. It is a nickname for Krishna. KaNNan may be the tamil name for 'Kana'.

TOS, sorry. have to disagree with you.
after a much acclaimed research in 1997, it was agreed that the Hindi Kanna has nothing whatsoever to do with the Tamil Kannan.
